In the Middle Years, our students embark on a pivotal journey through Secondary School, where independence becomes a focal point of their educational experience. This period is all about applying and expanding their knowledge in literacy and numeracy, as well as mastering life skills that prepare them for the future.

Our teaching approach is dynamic and interactive, with a strong emphasis on real-life applications and community involvement. Through a carefully selected range of texts and age-appropriate literature—students delve into the complexities of reading and writing. These studies are designed to challenge their understanding and encourage critical thinking.

At this stage, the curriculum is fully immersive, allowing students to engage deeply with all areas of learning, with special attention to English, Mathematics, and Science. By providing a rich tapestry of academic content alongside practical experiences, we ensure that our students are not just learning, but also living the educational principles that will serve them throughout their lives.

All teaching and learning programs at Dharra School are based on the Victorian Curriculum.

• Literacy: Reading & Viewing, Writing, Speaking & Listening
• Numeracy: Number & Algebra, Measurement & Geometry, Statistics & Probability
• Exploratory Learning:  Explore Science and Humanities topics to build curiosity and broaden world knowledge.
• Independent Learning: Rights, Resilience and Respectful Relationships (RRRR), eSMART (Cyber Safety, Respect Online, Digital Responsibility), School-wide Positive Behaviour (SWPB)
• Travel Education: Journey planning, getting about, behaving appropriately, staying safe; ongoing assessments including problem-solving and worry registers, excursion travel education checklists
• Excursions / Work Experience: Throughout the year, students engage in a variety of camps and excursions, e.g. Swimming Program, Travel Training to local shopping centres and Work Experience, where in, students volunteer their time in the community.

Senior

Our curriculum is finely tuned to equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive as independent members of the community after graduation. We emphasise the practical application of vocational skills and academic knowledge, ensuring that students can seamlessly transition from the classroom to real-world environments.

Our teaching methodology is centred on experiential learning, where students have the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities that foster independence. This approach not only solidifies their learning but also prepares them for the practicalities of life beyond school.

As students progress, they receive an education that lays the groundwork for their senior secondary program of study. This is where they start to map out their future, choosing pathways that align with their aspirations and abilities, whether they’re aiming for further education, training, or entering the workforce. With a strong foundation built on real-life experiences, our Senior School students are well-prepared to navigate the complexities of adulthood and make meaningful contributions to their communities.

In 2024, we will embark on the design and creation of the VCP (Victorian Pathways Certificate) programs, which are slated for implementation in 2025. It’s important to note that the VCP will not be in operation at Dharra during 2024. Instead, this time will be dedicated to enhancing community engagement and honing life, work-related, and independent living skills. This focus will ensure that our students are not just academically equipped but are also well-prepared with the practical competencies necessary to navigate and contribute to the world around them.
